SHEA’S STADIUM

In 2008, the Belmar Pro was graced by the surfing of Mr. Shea Lopez of Indian Rocks Beach, Florida. Shea and his brother Corey Lopez are a couple of Gulf Boys who grew up to surf among the best in the world on the ASP Tour.

Shea was on tour for nearly ten years and finished as high as 11th in the world. Then last year, he came up to New Jersey to pal around with his Ergophobia homeboys and surf the Belmar Pro. Of course, he made the semi-finals. Mr. Shea Lopez opened up about that experience, talked some smack on Buckley, and made plans to come back.

What was your take on the event last year and the whole New Jersey Shore scene?
I expected to see more of the MTV scene from Jersey Shore. Surprisingly, there was only a hardcore surf culture and curious bystanders represented at the event.  The standout moment for me was taking out Brendan Buckley when he choked on a last second ride that would've sealed the win for him.

Did you score while you were here?
The pizza was better than the surf. Yeah I scored - a few extra pounds to take home with me.

Riding for Ergo, you must get a pretty good idea of the talent here in New Jersey. And since you’re a pundit now, whom should we keep an eye on?
Sam Hammer seems to really be holding it down.  He's the man up there, for sure. Brendan Buckley is the “Modern Collective” surfer of the state. Rob Kelly is a great all-around surfer. Ian Bloch and Tommy Ilken are young and have a ton of potential. There's a long list of guys ripping up there, I could keep going on and on about how nuts everyone up there is. Really, you have to be nuts to surf in 34-degree water!

Well, we’ll see you in a few weeks.
Yeah, See you then. Hope the surf looks like all the pics and video I always see from up there.
