The Fosters Belmar Pro has always been known to draw surf stars and this year is no difference. In September, global big wave superstar, Maya Gabeira will be As part of the Red Bull Carissa and Maya Project, Maya Gabeira will be on hand at the Belmar Pro, mentoring a group of local women who just might have what it takes to be the first surf star from the Northeast. After spending a week with top ASP Womens Surfer, Carissa Moore, the girls will be descending on Belmar with Maya Gabeira. Gabiera, who has won the last four Billabong XXL Womens Awards and was recognized with an ESPY, will not only be mentoring the women under her wing, but also providing inspiration to all the younger girls at the Jersey Shore, surfing and signing autographs. Gabeira will be working with Quincy Davis, Ariel and Alexis Engstrom, all from Montauk, NY, Brittany Hickey of Margate, Cassidy McClain of Ventnor, and Sara Beveridge of Oakhurst to show them the ropes. She’ll also be well leaning on some of the experience of Ryan McGrath of Manasquan and Jamie DeWitt, originally of LBI, who now lives on the Outer Banks. Gabeira is originally from Brazil, where she was first introduced to surfing. But her passion eventually took here to Hawaii and she is a now a regular on the North Shore. The 23-year-old Red Bull athlete makes a career out of traveling to the most intimidating waves on the planet from Jaws to Alaska and even giant Teahu’poo. Who knows? Maybe we’ll get a hurricane swell.
